Whenever Google comes to the news, it vouches the openness of its Android Operating system and states that it is for the benefit of consumers. Whereas the Android Operating, system is far more open than others in the arena, such as Linux.

Openness of the operating systems

Google has enabled any user or company customise the operating system according to their needs and fancies. Hot Google’s most prominent products like Gmail- the Android market and Google maps are some of the sources that are totally closed and no one has the right to alter it. This, on the other hand, has confused any consumers who feel that they are confused whether to buy from the android market or a no-market android device. Another issue that is destroying the Google Android market is the problem of fragmentation. Fragmentation and custom skins are destroying the repute of Google and Android devices. Carrier and other manufacturer are to be blamed for all this.

Problem of fragmentation

Most of the manufacturers include their own interface on their respective devices so that they may be demarked from others in the market. But the same interface built to give additional benefits to the user is causing problems of fragmentation. This fragmentation is again giving way to outdated devices. Google has lately initiated the Android 4.0 Ice Cream sandwich operating system in its devices. Many manufacturers have specified for an update, but till now the advanced OS is included only in the Samsung Galaxy Nexus gadgets. Other latest models that will surely get this advanced updating this year is the HTC Rezound, Droid Razr, and Droid Bionic. But models like the LG revolution will probably never get updated due to the fragmentation problems. The LG model is only seven months old in the market.

The alliance for Open Handsets includes such brand names as LG, HTC, Motorola, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon and AT&T.
