iPad apps like Facebook and YouTube can be viewed full screen in your Apple TV by using a new hack christened MobileX to jailbreak the Apple TV. At present, using the AirPlay technology from Apple, the wireless streaming of photos, videos and music from your iOS gadgets like iPhone, iPad, iPod or the Mac computer is possible. But the downside is that you can’t access the full app store from Apple TV.
Apple TV Now
Apple TV does not have much application support and an actual TV set from Apple have still not been realized. In August 2010, a much improved Apple TV appeared in the market which was much smaller than the previous versions with just coming to a quarter of its previous size. It included streaming cinema from Netflix and included 99 cent rental TV from channels like ABC and Fox.
What is MobileX?
MobileX is the brainchild of Steve Troughton-Smith and Nick alias TheMudKip. They have hacked the Apple TV using the latest fireCore release that came into the scene last year with the name SeasOnPass. The MobileX team had rewritten the whole Springboard interface, the home screen of the standard iOS device, from scratch using QuartzCore alone.
The hack has been tested to work well with most iOS apps and works well with resolution scaled up to 720p with decent audio and video quality. Multiple apps can be shown side by side, quit apps, launch Safari or even connect to Wi-Fi. However, VNC has made the interface of the apps a bit slow.
So what the hack does is to replace the Springboard interface with the MobileX written interface that allows iPhone and iPad applications to run on the Apple TV. The hack has since added the IR remote to control the iOS applications.
